First Thoughts

I think the first chapter is sometimes the most important of the entire book. The Trial starts out very ominous. There are definitely a lot of questions to be answered as you've pointed out. I'm not exactly sure of what is going on with the people watching him in the next house. Doesn't it seem like a play though, because of this "audience"?

The extra long paragraphs are hard to get through. I love the style of dialog- more natural.

I think the landlady knows more than she is letting on, very shifty if you ask me. The three men act towards Josef as if everything is normal and he should just go along with it. Very intriguing.

I think I'm going to like this one!
